Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Review 2024
Introduction
The 911 is Porsche’s most successful and most loved series across the globe. Sri Lanka has direct dealerships of the German automaker since 1996. However, Porsche cars have been in the favorite list of Sri Lankans even before that. GTS written on any Porsche indicates that you are looking at a long trip focused and more track oriented variant of the car. The 911 Carrera 4 GTS is the latest model in the 911 Carrera GTS range and it offers a drive like no other in its segment.
Engine, Mileage and Variants
Let us start with the heart of the car. The Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS is powered by a 3.8-liter Boxer engine that produces 430 HP @ 7500 RPM and a peak torque of 440 Nm @ 5750 RPM. This powerful engine can be mounted on a 7-speed manual gearbox or a PDK. The power is sent to the rear wheels. A four-wheel drive option is also offered with the sports car. This makes the car capable of doing 0-100 km/hr in 4.4 seconds with a manual gearbox and 4.0 seconds with a PDK. The manual car has a top speed of 304 km/hr and the PDK has 302 km/hr.
Exteriors
The 911 Carrera has always been a very good looking car with the GTS version looking even more aggressive. The 911 Carrera 4 GTS is 4509 mm long and 1852 mm wide with a wheelbase of 2450 mm. The car is 1296 mm in height. The rear end of the car is 44 mm wider than the Carrera S to provide a sportier and stable drive. The manual car weighs 1875 kg and the PDK variant is 20 kg heavier due to the heavy gearbox. The GTS has Bi-Xenon headlamps similar to that of the hyper cousin 911 Spyder.
Interiors
Coming to the interiors of the car, Porsche has done a good job inside the car as well. The interior compliments the sporty character of the car while being practical. The seats are ergonomically built to provide a good handling while being comfortable on long trips. Different seat packages with sporty and adaptive seats are also offered. The centre console has an instrument console with a 4.6-inch colour screen which displays real time drive data. The steering wheel gives a feel of the “SPORT” in GTS. The car has Sport, Sport Plus and Launch Control settings on the steering wheel. Porsche provides a variety of packages for audio and communications. It has tied up with Bose and Burmester for the surround sound systems.
Braking and Safety
The 911 Carrera 4 GTS does not miss out on the safety front. The standard car comes with a 340 mm disc with a six-piston set up at the front and a 320 mm disc with four-pistons at the rear. These discs are made of aluminum. If you think these brakes won’t be enough to control the GTS, Porsche has something special for you. The car can be bought with an optional Ceramic brake package which the automaker calls ‘Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes’. PCCB comes with 350 mm ceramic discs at both the ends. These brakes are fitted with 6-piston aluminium monoblock fixed brakes calipers at the front and 4-piston unit at the rear. The ceramic brakes also ensure better performance being around 50% lighter than the standard brakes.
Verdict
The Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS is a machine for people who desire performance as well as reliability. The car will behave all sobered up on the streets and turn into a beast the moment it enters a race track. However, the 911 has a history of being unstable at times.
