Overview

The largest Malaysian automobile manufacturer Perodua is becoming a popular brand in the Sri Lankan market. Its popularity and demand in the Malaysian market for hatchbacks and mini cars is now reflecting the Sri Lankan market as well. Perodua Axia is a compact hatchback offering which is very popular amongst the small family audiences in the country. Axia is a fine quality hatchback with a compact design and comfort features for 5 occupants.

The hatchback offers a 1.0 litre petrol engine with a 5 speed Manual transmission and a 4 speed Auto transmission which delivers a maximum output of 66 HP @ 6000 rpm along with a maximum torque of 90 Nm @ 3600 rpm. Perodua claims the combined mileage delivery of the hatchback to be 21.6 kmpl with Manual transmission and 20.1 kmpl with Auto transmission which are very impressive figures for a 1.0 litre engine. The hatchback accelerates 0-100 kmph in more than 15 seconds.

Perodua has given the hatchback an elegant and compact design. Bold halogen Headlamps and a sporty bonnet with defining lines, curvy edges of the front bumper with pseudo fog lamp design and a broad front grille makes the hatchback look huge in size. On the sides the hatchback possesses body colored outer door handles and character lines which continue till the rear of the car that has got Red lens LED tail lamps and the rear bumper also has pseudo fog lamp design.

From the inside the hatchback has a black finish color scheme with the distinct curvy dashboard and a 2 DIN Audio unit with Radio,CD player compatibility with a 3 spoke sporty steering wheel, broad MID unit and comfortable fabricated seats. The car is spaciously designed from the inside with a large luggage space and storage compartments.

A decent amount of safety features are equipped in the hatchback like Dual SRS airbags, Anti-snatch hook, and a number of reminder features like Seat belt reminder, Key reminder, and Headlight reminder which are all new technology safety features for a secure ride along with Reverse sensors and rear brake lamp.

Mileage and Fuel economy

The 1.0 litre fuel efficient petrol engine offers a 5 speed manual transmission and a 4 speed Automatic transmission which deliver a combined mileage of 21.6 kmpl and 20.1 kmpl respectively as claimed by the brand which are very impressive mileage figures for a compact hatchback.

Power

The 1.0 litre petrol engine equipped in the hatchback offering a 5 speed Manual transmission and a 4 speed Auto transmission delivers a maximum output of 66 HP @ 6000 rpm along with a maximum torque of 90 Nm @ 3600 rpm. A very powerful performance is not expected from the hatchback according to these figures but only a nominal one.

Acceleration & Pickup

Axia accelerates 0-100 kmph in more than 15 seconds with a top speed of 155 kmph which according to a 5 speed manual transmission or a 4 speed auto transmission and such a compact car size could have been little better.

Exterior

A quite bold look is given to the Perodua hatchback with an elegant curvy design on the front, Broad Halogen headlamps, curvy edges and lines on the front body colored bumper with a smart design of pseudo fog lamps embraces the front stance. The hatchback has got a distinct design of defining character lines through out the exteriors, on the front bonnet, on the sides stretching to the rear tailgate of the hatchback. Red lens type LED tail lamps gives the rear of the hatchback a stunning enlightening look along with the rear brake lamp on top of the rear windshield. The rear bumper is also body colored and has the similar pseudo fog lamp design. Features like Rectractable Electric side mirrors , Rear wiper, Laminated Green Windshield, sporty looking black window panels and body colored outer door handles enhances the exteriors of the hatchback and its compact size.

Perodua Axia stands at 3640mm x 1620mm x 1510 mm (L x W x H) with a wheelbase of 2455 mm which provides a wide legroom space to the interior cabin adding to the comfort of the passengers.

Interior

Spaciously designed, the seats of the hatchback are fabricated with adjustable head rests for the comfortable lumber and thigh supported front seats whereas the rear seats are bench styled with head rests and full of comfort. A black tone environment is attained in the hatchback giving it a sportier broad look with the curvy distinct non-linear dashboard design and the sporty 3 spoke power steering wheel with broad MID unit on addition. The inner door handle and window button panel also have a black finish similar to the interior design. Centre console has got a triangular sleek look with a 2 DIN Audio unit compatible for Radio and CD player, rectangular shaped middle AC vents and round shape side ones. All in all, a sporty stance interiors makes the hatchback unique in it's kinds.

Interior Comfort

Comfort wise the hatchback provides sufficient comfort features that many of the rival compact hatchbacks do not. Starting with the comfortable seating, the hatchback provides very comforting front and rear seats in it's class with thigh and lumber support, front and rear head rests, Height adjustable driver seat which is rare to find in a compact hatchback, and back pockets of the front seats. A number of storage compartments are provided in the hatchback like bottle and cup holders both in the front and the rear, a multi purpose storage container, and a wide luggage space to easily fit in luggage for a weekend outing. Other than storage, the hatchback also offers other ease and comforting features like power steering wheel and power windows, wireless door lock with integrated alarm key, and central locking. 4 speakers are fitted in the car for optimum sound and entertainment during a fussy ride to drive with joy.

Interior Measurements

The legroom space provided in the hatchback for the rear passengers is wide and impressive along with the luggage space of 240 litres which can easily fit in a weekend holiday material.

Engine and Performance

The 1.0 litre petrol engine variant available in the country offers a 5 speed Manual transmission and a 4 speed Auto transmission that delivers a maximum output of 66 HP @ 6000 rpm along with a maximum torque of 90 Nm @ 3600 rpm. Delivery of power and the hatchback's performance are not that impressive as its other features except the splendid mileage delivery claimed by Perodua.

Stereo and Accessories

A simple 2 DIN Audio unit, Radio and CD player compatible, is equipped in the hatchback with 4 speakers with accessories like an Anti-snatch hook, Carpet mats, a Safety triangle and a Registration plate holders. Not much featured audio unit is provided in the Standard G variant of the hatchback.

Wheels

Sporty looking 8 spoke 14 inch Alloy wheels are equipped in the hatchback with a tire size of 175/65 R14. Very sporty addition is done to the car's exterior with these broad Alloy wheels.

Braking and Handling

Braking wise the Standard G variant lacks behind from the other variants. Only front disc brakes and rear drum brakes are provided with a power steering wheel.

Safety and Security

Safety features are not overlooked and decently equipped in the hatchback. A number of reminder features like Seat belt reminder, Key reminder, and Headlight reminder help the driver and the passengers to have a safe ride while they are in a hassle.
