Mercedes-Benz E Class Saloon

Introduction:

The Bavarian automaker Mercedes-Benz has been presenting the world with some of the most exquisite models from quite a long time and the all new E- Class is no exception. First introduced in 1993, the E- Class is currently in its fifth generation and has went through a series of changes that has helped in garnering a significant attraction of customers across the globe. The exuberant design, high power, ergonomically finished interiors and advanced safety features makes the E- Class a highly competent saloon in the market of Sri Lanka.

Engine, mileage & variants:

Four petrol engines and two diesel engine variants are available in Sri Lankan market to thrill you in an effective manner. Among the four petrol variants the maximum power is delivered by 5.4 litre V8 engine measuring 430 kW at 5500 rpm while the peak torque measures 800 Nm at mere 1700 – 5000 rpm. The 3.0 litre 6 cylinder engine is the most potent among the diesel variants delivering a maximum power of 195 kW at 3800 rpm and the peak torque measures 620 Nm at mere 1600 – 2400 rpm. A saloon with characteristics of a sports car, clocking 100 kmph mark in E- Class will take 3.6 to 10.2 seconds and the top speed measures 210 – 250 kmph depending upon the engine. The optimized direct injection system and the advanced turbochargers work in harmonics with a highly refined combustion process which reduces fuel consumption, delivering a mileage ranging between 7.9 – 17.2 kmpl.

Exteriors:

The front of the new E- Class has more flowing aspect as the saloon now posses wedge shaped bonnet merging into the radiator. The new design headlamps with LED daytime running not only enhance the aesthetics but safety too. The expressive wing design of the front bumpers reflects a discreet sporty lower vehicle edge and the compact rear bumper width dynamically enhance the vehicle width. The overall dimensions of the saloon measure 4879 mm X 1854 mm X 1474 mm (L X W X H) and the wheelbase measures 2874 mm that makes provision for ample cabin space for the occupants. One can choose from the range of alloy wheels measuring 16 inch 17 inch, 18 inch, and 19 inch according to the requirement.

Interiors:

Maximum individualization is offered in the cabin of E- Class and makes everything for the individual to do and feel comfortable. The attractive trim elements in ground aluminum and the analogue clock on the center bring driving culture as well as refinement within the cabin and the large wheelbase helps in providing appropriate head room, leg room and shoulder room to the occupants. Besides that, the car has been embedded with several multimedia and audio features, the most notable of them being the advanced Command Online Multimedia System equipped with 17.8 cm color TFT display which provides an interface for audio and navigation controls. The boot space provided is impressive and measures 540 litres which can further be enhanced with the 60:40 split arrangement.

Safety, Braking and Miscellaneous:

The Bavarian automaker deploys a range of safety measures to support safe driving in everyday operation along with assisting in most critical situations. The braking system of the car consists of internally ventilated disc brakes at the front and solid disc brakes at the rear accompanied with, Electronic Brake Force Distribution System (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Anti Lock Braking System (ABS), which is more than enough to offer you a superior handling and an effortless drive. The air bags system (front, side and curtain) work in 2 stages depending on the intensity of impact and hence keeps you safe in case of collision. Besides that, the car has been equipped with other salient features like Collision Prevention Assist, Attention Assist, Neck Pro head restraints for front seats, Electronic Stability Programme and the Active Parking Assist which ensure maximum safety of the passengers.

Verdict:

The car is a perfect blend of exceptional power, explicit design and everlasting comfort, which makes it a tough competitor of BMW 5 Series. The only disappointing attributes being the exorbitant price and low fuel economy.
